John Oliver Makes Dark Joke After Prince Philip's Death

John Oliver has reacted to Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh’s passing with a joke hinting at how close he and the Queen really were.

The 99-year-old member of the Royal Family died on April 9 at Windsor Castle. He was the longest-serving royal consort in the history of the British monarchy.

John Oliver Reminds How ‘Close’ Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip Really Were

“When a 99-year-old with such a checkered moral history leaves us, it’s hard to know exactly how to feel or, indeed, whether to articulate how you actually do,” Oliver said on Late Night with Seth Meyers.

The comedian and host of Last Week with John Oliver reminded viewers that Prince Philip and Queen Elizabeth were cousins.

The royal couple were third cousins through Queen Victoria. Prince Philip was related to Queen Victoria as a great-great-grandson through his maternal side, and Queen Elizabeth was related to the same queen through her paternal family.

“They were very close,” Oliver joked.

“And I don’t think it was just restricted to them. I believe that family is familiar with one another,” he continued.

Oliver added: “In the way that they can’t be close emotionally, they certainly are close biologically.”

Oliver’s Prescient Remarks On Meghan Markle

This isn’t the first time Oliver has offered his humorous, critical take on the Royal Family.

In 2018, he made some prescient comments on Meghan Markle joining the Royal Family ahead of her wedding to Prince Harry.

Oliver anticipated that marrying into a royal family was going to be an emotionally taxing experience for the former actress.

“I would not blame her if she pulled out of this at the last minute,” Oliver told Stephen Colbert in 2018.

“I don’t think you need to have just seen the pilot episode of The Crown to get a basic sense that she might be marrying into a family that could cause her some emotional complications," Oliver added.

The host and comedian also said he, a commoner, wouldn’t dream of marrying into the royal family as he knew he wouldn’t “be welcomed”.

“I hope she likes it, it’s going to be weird for her,” the comedian also said.

Oliver’s comments resurfaced after the explosive interview given by Markle and Prince Harry to Oprah Winfrey last March.

Markle and Prince Harry agreed to sit down for a two-hour interview with Winfrey. The couple opened up on the racist abuse Markle received after joining the British Royal Family, which was among the reasons the pair left the UK.

The interview also includes a segment in which Markle revealed that she’d considered taking her own life due to the abuse.
